Choose where recordings live on your Mac
illuminate keeps everything on your Mac. Each session is a folder holding its recording, camera video, transcript, screenshots and the reports you made, all inside your sessions folder. You choose that folder in Settings → Storage. (Where shared videos play from is separate: Settings → Share Settings.)
Find your files
Open Settings → Storage. Sessions folder shows where it is; Show in Finder opens it.
For one session, right-click it in Sessions and choose Show in Finder.
Move the sessions folder
- In Settings → Storage, choose Change… and pick a folder, on this Mac or another drive.
- illuminate asks what to do with the sessions you have:
- Move Sessions moves them to the new folder.
- Leave Them Here keeps them where they are. They won't show in illuminate until you choose that folder again; nothing is deleted.
- Use Default goes back to the standard folder.
You can change the folder once the current recording is finished. Shared links keep working wherever your sessions are.
If the folder is on a drive that isn't connected, illuminate tells you, and new recordings go to the standard folder until the drive is back.
Free up space after sharing
Once a recording is shared, its video lives online, so you can remove the local copy and keep everything else.
- Open Settings → Storage → Free Up Space. It shows how much space your shared sessions' videos take.
- Choose Remove Local Videos…, then confirm.
The videos go to the Trash. Each session keeps its report, screenshots, transcript and links, and plays its video from where it's shared. To do this automatically, turn on Remove local videos after sharing.
One catch with Vimeo: new reports and walkthroughs take their screenshots from the video. With R2 or illuminate hosting, illuminate uses the online copy; with Vimeo it needs the local one. Free those sessions once you're done making things from them.
Removing local videos never takes a link down. To remove a link, use your account.
